New IE features I'd like to see...

I was listening to a Dot Net Rocks show recently, and the topic of the MS IE platform's evolution came up.  They mentioned a couple of features they'd like to see in IE, like Tabbed Browsing.

So over the weekend, I was thinking of features that I'd like to see. Now, I was trying to take a nap at the time, and must've been half asleep, because most of the ideas I came up with weren't too good.  Like “3D Browsing.“  This idea would be to break apart a web page into layers like images, advertisments, text links, and allow the user to view one or more layer at a time.  Well, not all that great of an idea, but then again, I was half asleep.

But an idea I had that I think could work would be “Tree History.“  This would be an enancement to the back and next buttons, which would give you an option to decend branches of your history's tree.  Currently, with IE, when you click the next button, you have the option to load your history pane or go to the next history page on the stack.  Often, I find myself wanting to back up and decend a previously visited branch of my history. So, instead of this:

Clicking my next button would give me an option to go to different branches of my history, if present, like this:

I'd think this would be pretty easy to implement.  So easy that I'm sure it's been done before.  If you've had an idea for a new feature, post it here.

That's a good one.

How about a "View in Mozilla" option when you right-click a link or on the body of a page? Then I could switch back and forth among the browsers with ease.

Holy Cool Feature Batman! A colleague sent me a link to a blog entry! written by Brendan Tompkins. He has an idea for enhancing the history view of IE to allow navigation back to and into past histories. A must read. After reading it, I had an idea of my own! I’d like to search the text of pages I’ve visited recently. Ideally this would be in realtime. Perhaps something like this is an ideal problem for WinFS to solve?...

Darrel, this feature actually exists in Mozilla, to view a page in IE! (http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/#ieview)

Keeping the full navigation history as a tree means that the history would never ever shrink. Each time you navigated you would just be creating a branch on the tree. Eventually you'd run out of memory and then people would complain that IE is a memory pig.

Keeping it as a straight list means that if you create a branch, IE can throw away the navigation history after the branch point (freeing memory). It also means that if you hit "Next" you don't have to try to guess which branch the user is trying to go "Next" down.

These are things you think about while taking a nap?

Raymond,

I can't believe that keeping a tree as opposed to a stack would be that much of a memory hog. You'd only have to keep the URL, Title, possible Date and a pointer. I don't code winforms apps, but we're not talking about a lot of memory here, are we?

q- Yeah and it really sucked because the kid was going go get up from his nap soon, and I only had a small window to snooze myself.

Funny, though. I once heard that Salvadore Dali would intentionally fall asleep with a wineglass balanced on his chest, so that he'd wake up when it started to spill. He'd quickly sketch whatever he was thinking about. I've never tried that.

Nick - I know! That's why I asked for it! Thankfully, Raymond Chen obliged.
