Interview with Eric Gunnerson

Interview with Eric Gunnerson

ActiveWin recently interviewed Eric Gunnerson (Program Manger: Microsoft Visual C# .NET).  You can read it here.

Some important highlights, all quotes from Eric:

"I think attributes are an absolutely killer feature, and their design is very clean and elegant. They give you a new option in how you structure frameworks, which makes a huge difference in our overall approach.  I'm also a big fan of foreach...."

Yes, attributes are really excellent features.  Compare how easy it is to setup test suites in NUnit vs. JUnit.  Oh yeah, you don't have to setup test suites at all in NUnit.  And after you get used to it, foreach is much easier.  But sometimes I just can't get it to do what I want.  Anyone else have that problem?

"There are big pushes towards managed code throughout the company. It's quicker to write, easier to maintain, and reduces the security surface area of your code."

I agree 100 percent.  Show this to your boss if he still insists on using unmanaged code.

"There is also some latent skepticism about the speed of managed code, though the work the DirectX team has done on DX9 has quieted some of that, as they've gotten very close to unmanaged code speed."

So if speed concerns are a non-issue, see the previous quote.

Would you trade slightly slower performance for greater security?
