Why should you switch from SourceSafe to Vault

Eric Sink posts on Reasons to switch from SourceSafe to Vault.  Now since Eric is the CEO of Sourcegear, the company that makes Vault, you might think he is a little biased.  But his company also makes SourceOffSite, which enables users to work with SourceSafe over the Internet.  Eric talks about this interesting relationship here.  Marc LaFleur also recommends Vault.  And Vault integrates with Joel Spolsky's FogBUGZ product (the first program to do so natively).

Microsoft has made major improvements to all of their developer products except visual source safe. I think its been years since the last service pack for it has been released. The source safe documentation is also poor. Why is this the case? Does microsoft just want to get out of the source control business?

We just went to Vault rather than VSS and it came down to one reason why, performance! Unless everyone on your team is on an internal LAN, which we're not, VSS is very, very slow.

I know that SourceGear makes an add-on for VSS to make it more quick, but I never had tried it out.

I've seen SourceOffSite in action and it worked for us. Admittedly we did not put it through serious hoops, just real-life standard Internet connection stuff. Vault looks to be a good product - and hopefully easier to use and install than CVS.
