The Gimp gets de-casted

Well, I got the walking cast removed from my left leg today.  What a relief!  I immediately went home and took a nice long shower and scrubbed down that leg (it’s been since Jan 23 when I had surgery that it has really seen the light of day).  Lucky me it was 65 degrees here in Richmond so that I could wear shorts.

They took some x-rays of my ankle, which I wish I could keep, but they don’t like to make copies.  Something about insurance fraud or whatever.  Woosies!  So I’m sitting there waiting for the doctor to come in, staring at the x-rays with 2 huge screws in my ankle (I didn’t know about those), one of which looked like the little pointy end was sticking out past the edge of the bone.  So when the doctor came in and rubbed the scar, which is still very noticeable along with the staple scars that dot either side, I promptly passed out.  My doc jokingly said the larger they are, the harder they fall.

But now I’m walking around with a big gray boot thing.  I was hoping it would be metal so I could pretend that I was Forest Gump and could tell my coworkers that, “Software programming is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.”  I guess I’ll have to stick with my current nickname of “The Gimp.”

Lamont - Thanks for the well wishes! I live in the West End. It's right off of I-64, and of course I'd be willing to drive to somewhere more central for us. Maybe we could get a NOVA/Richmond Nerd dinner going!

"I promptly passed out" LOL. I am recovering from knee surgey...its been a long, slow road. Hang in there.

Greg - thanks for the encouragement. You hang in there too.

The doctor said there is a name for whatever caused me to pass out, but I don't remember it. At least it is a valid medical condition and I'm not just a woos! (I hope!)

Don't worry about the passing out thing.. My dad does it, something about your vagus nerve or something like that. Sorry to hear that you got screwed.

I just came home from the hospital yesterday. Complete dislocation, broken tibia and torn ligaments. The surgeons reset the dislocation and added a plate and 7 screws to hold the bone together. Prognosis is 2 weeks in bed with leg elevated, then a cam walker for 4 more weeks at least. Crutches the whole time. Dev Days is next week, so I'll have to get a wheelchair and pack the vicodin. That counts as bed rest, right?

Richard - actually DevDays is well within what doctors typically consider "bed rest". A few other things include drinking beer, blogging, installing Windows whatever, and any Microsoft-sponsored event (DevDays, PDC, TechEd).

Richard - oh yeah, sucks about all the surgery, but glad you're ok. Heal up quick!

Vagus nerve: Etymology: New Latin vagus nervus, literally, wandering nerve
: either of the 10th pair of cranial nerves that arise from the medulla and supply chiefly the viscera especially with autonomic sensory and motor fibers -- called also vagus

I think we can work up a new term for the blue screen of death: the vagus nervus!

Glad to hear you're doing better, Darrell.

Thanks Bonafe! Yeah, much better now that I'm not looking at screws inside of me and a big ugly scar on my ankle. :)

Is DNJ properly insured for all the leg injuries around here? Hope your healing goes well too. As soon as my blog is set up, we'll compate notes.

Richard - actually DNJ blogging entails a small amount of HMO coverage (not really). :)

Good luck getting your blog setup, let me know when you do!
