Quit Cashing in on the Agile name

I’m tired of hearing how everything is now “Agile.” Agile databases, agile RUP, agile documentation, agile testing, agile modeling, agile management, agile architecture, agile requirements, agile Extreme Programming, agile IT, even agile BDUF! It’s enough to make an agile enthusiast cry… *sob*.

While I’m on this rant, let me go for a second round. Extreme Programming != Agile. The terms are not interchangeable. XP is a type of agile method, but certainly not the first nor the last (nor the best in my opinion, but if it works for you…). I’m so tired of seeing people equate the two. If you are making that mistake, you don’t know enough about what you are doing. Please put the gun down before you hurt yourself.

Ok, I feel better now.

Darrell, <FerrisBuellerQuote>you sounded like Dirty Harry just then</FerrisBuellerQuote>.

Agility is a victim of it's own success and the marketeers are trying to cash in on it's high buzzwordiness factor.

Why don't you offer a series of blog entries on the definitive Agile, the definite XP, etc. I know you've got http://dotnetjunkies.com/WebLog/darrell.norton/category/345.aspx?Show=All but something to set the record straight would be a welcome addition!

Can I buy you lunch on Saturday for it?

Grant - there's no such thing as a free lunch! Heh. Yeah, I'll get around to posting some more on agile software development (notice the LOWER casing).
