OT: Adventures in moving

You know who your real friends are when they move you a second time within a year. They know how much crap you have and remember how hot it was last year about this time when they were stuck helping you move.

I learned many things during the move. I found out that UHaul can take a reservation, but they can’t keep a reservation. Anyone can take a reservation, it’s the keeping of the reservation that’s important (Seinfeld, anyone?). I also found out that these bad boys (I had two) can do 70 on the highway. I found out that Mark likes to make mechanical contraptions with rope to lower furniture down from a second floor deck. I found out that 3 people can move an elliptical up the stairs, around a corner, and into a room (that thing was heavy!). Luckily Thomas is stack diesel.

So, thanks to Mark (+family), Paul, Thomas, my brother, my girlfriend, and my mom. You’re the best!

Yup ... always nice to have good moving friends. Beer and pizza seems to work well for incentive.

Or soda for those that don't drink beer. :)

Thank you D. for not asking me to help... I would have had to make up some excuse about a wedding to go to or something.

You see, about 6 months ago we helped a friend move and I vowed that that was my last "friend move" of my life. When Ian goes away to college, I'll help him move. That's it. I'll help just about anyone do just about anything else but move.

Sounds harsh doesn't it? Well, my life's been much happier since I've converted to being a non-friend mover. I'd encourage all of you out there to make a stand against friend moves.

What about when you move Brendan? Moving by yourself will be more than payback for all those times you might have helped friends move.

As a matter of fact, I won't even help myself move!

Your idea is great if you're already in the house that you want to live in the rest of your life, but not so good if, like me, you were in an apartment. Or (like me 1 year ago) you got a great job in another city but certainly not great enough to afford the exorbitant cost of hiring movers and there would be no way I could move over a weekend all by myself.

Sorry D I didn't mean to seem like such a jerk... It's just a timely/touchy subject for me. After recently helping this friend move, 3 months later it looked like we were facing another that same person again and I had to say no.

Luckily this person is hiring movers, which is actually fairly inexpensive for what you get. I hired three people to move me from Boston to VA for about $1200, and I didn't lift a finger. Well worth the mony spent, IMO.

The same person within 3 months would touch a nerve with me too. :) I was kind of pushing it moving again about a year later. I will be taking a break from moving for a while now.

The problem with my move is that it would have been more money than that to move in-state! All companies charge a minimum weight, and I wasn't anywhere near that minimum, so I couldn't see myself wasting $800 of the $1600 total move cost. I can treat all of my friends to a *huge* party for $800.

Next time, when I've accumulated an entire houseful of stuff and it's all in one place and I'll have a little more money saved up, sure I'll use movers! :D

You know what they say...

Friends help you move, Real Friends help you move bodies.
