2005 New Years Resolutions

Here are some of my 2005 resolutions:

Professional

  • Learn Python – I’m going to start learning a new programming language every year. This year is going to be Python. I’ve already learned a good bit, and I really like Python’s way of working with lists. Expect some posts on that.
  • Post more articles – I have some I’ve already written, and some that I have ideas for. And since that is probably what you read this blog for, I’ll finally start blogging them!
  • Upgrade my MCSE to Windows Server 2003 – I’ve been putting this off since April.
  • Learn more about design patterns – I’m not at the level I would like to be. I’ve got a couple books in mind to help out, as well as constant use at work. I’d also like to reread Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture.
  • WeProgram.NET – our user group is doing well, and we’re planning some great stuff in 2005!
  • Read at least 12 professional development books – this includes books on .NET, Python, general software development, design patterns, consulting, business, and management.

Personal

  • Get married and take a nice long honeymoon in Hawaii.
  • Then get a puppy – I want a Labrador Retriever, she wants a Yorkshire Terrier.
  • Spend lots of quality time with family and friends.
  • Read the KJV Study Bible all the way through, preferably every day.

Great list of goals! On the Professional: are you looking at Python in general or IronPython in particular? On the Personal: congratulations on a (possible??) wedding date in 2005!

Also, reading the Bible everyday is a great habit to have, but I am curious why KJV and not NIV or other more modern version/translation? At one time, I used to read it in the original Hebrew and Greek, but that's a story for another day! :)

Robert - good questions all around.

For Python, I am looking at ActiveState's 2.4 version of Python. IronPython is just another implementation of Python, but written in .NET. That means if you want to extend the Python language, you can write .NET code to do it! Very cool. There is also Python.NET which allows you to access the CLR from Python for all the great .NET framework goodness.

Yep, we're set for August 2005! :)

And I'm reading the King James version because I've been reading the NIV the past 2 years, and I thought I'd shake it up a little. After the KJV, I'm going to look into New Living Translation and American Standard Bible versions. I'll also eventually get one that reads in chronological order (maybe the NLT one).

I'm impressed if you can read Greek or Hebrew, let alone both! :)

That's great about August! It will be here before you know it ...

That makes sense about KJV. It is an "elegant" literal translation.

It has been a number of years since I did straight Greek (for New Testament) or Hebrew (for Old Testament) readings, but every now and then I will pull out an Interliner Bible with English (KJV), Greek and Hebrew for something new and a kind of refresher.

I'm also interested in learning more about design patterns, if you find some good books, please post them!

Ben - I'll definitely post them as I read them! :)

For professional, I have design patterns on my list too. As for personal, I am Muslim so I will be reading the Quran. You should check it out yourself.

They say: "God has begotten a son!" - Glory be to Him! He is self-sufficient! His are all things in the heavens and on earth! You have no proof to support your claim! Do you say about God what you don't know? (Quran 10:68)

Great resolutions! I myself didn't set any this year, not on purpose but at the same time, feel pretty peaceful about it.

I finished the NT recently (NIV) and I'll be reading the gospels again and then off to the OT. I recently bought a copy of NLT and it's really easy to read. Not being a native speaker, KJV is kind of hard for me. However, NLT comes off lacking, well, authority compared to NIV. Don't know why...
Congrats on your planned wedding! Hawaii is great! I was there myself on my honeymoon and to this day - it's been almost 4 years now - I'm living off of that experience. It's a small sample of what heaven is like if you ask me.

I was glad to be reading a programmers blog who also reads the Bible. I have KJV, NIV, NLT and NASB versions.

I really like NLT and NASB, but I find it really helpful to read verses I can't really understand in other versions which may have a better translation of the verse, or at least more understandable for me.

That's one resolution I hope you keep.
May God bless you :-)
