I can't believe this!

I get home today from a nice relaxing weekend in ohio with the folks, and I have a notice in my mailbox from the New York DMV.  Apparently my license has been suspended for not paying a speeding ticket fee!

So... last... September or so, I got picked up for speeding.  I paid a traffic lawyer to go to court for me, his office mailed me a copy of the letter they sent to the court that they'd be representing me.

I never heard anything... not from the lawyer, not from the court.  Until the suspension notice today!

So I have to give a big WTF shout-out and tomorrow I have to make some calls and figure out what the hell happened.  I would have thought having my address and all that the court would at least have sent a threatening letter before suspending my license.  Somebody screwed up around here, and it looks like I'm the one who has to clean it up.

I have another horror story for you. I know it won't help you, but it might give some insight into how stupid the DMV and others can be. I had to get a friend of mine (we'll call him Buddy), out of jail a few years back because he was pulled over for expired tags. During the stop, the officer checked the DMV records and found that Buddy was also driving with an expired license.

Here is how it all started. Buddy goes to the DMV to fill out a change of address form. The lady at the counter gives him a form to fill out; which he does and turns it back in. All done right? Wrong! Turns out, the DMV here in VA has two computer systems, one for licensing and one for car registrations. And, you guessed it, they don't talk to each other. So when it comes time for Buddy's tags to be renewed, the mail keeps going to the wrong address. Finally, they get the Sheriff to try and deliver the notice. The Sheriff claims he can't find Buddy, even though Buddy's correct address is in DMV's licensing system! So they suspend his license.

Who had to pay big bucks for this mess? Right again! Buddy! Good luck Eric. You're gonna need it.
