What, everybody's counting the Bucs out?

My favorite football TV commercial from last year had some great one liners:
"Ricky Williams has only one thing on his mind: playing football."
"Kellen Winslow is the best thing that ever happened to Butch Davis."
"Gannon to Rice. Gannon to Brown. All year long."

The point is, of course, is that the future is tough to predict. As I'm sure you all know.

So here's my own worthless predictions:
1. New England is still going to be tough to beat, annoyingly.
2. Ain't no way the Bucs make it to the big game.
3. Pittsburgh might have a shot if they can stop choking to death in their own stadium.
4. As much as I hate to admit it, the NFL got it exactly right when it went with the cap and all the other restrictions designed to create a competitive league. It's a great time to be a fan.

Later.

You're right, no way the Bucs even make it to the playoffs. Detroit has a better chance at getting that wild card spot than the Bucs do. Of course, Detroit won't get it either.

The Pats will be tuff, and even though they have been my favorite team for over 20 years now, I can't see them going back again. Division winner: Yes. AFC Championship game: Maybe, but I think its going to come down to the Colts and the Steelers in the AFC. I think the Bills get a wildcard spot for sure. The Bengals are going to suprise some people this year.

NFC is just a big toss up the more I think about it. Any one of so many teams could luck their way into the big game. Seattle, Dallas, Green Bay, Vikings, Eagles, Atlanta all have decent shots. St. Louis, Detroit are going to be .500 teams but that may be good enough for one of them to squeeze into a wildcard spot.

hey i just want to say thanks to Ray for doing this again. i also want to do what i said i'd do last year and congradulate the Pats on another Super Bowl victory. i went to do it last year, but the posts were all gone.

as for this year, who knows...i'd like to see my Eagles play the Steelers in the Super Bowl, but i don't know if big ben can repeat his previous year, either way i think they still contend. as for my Eagles they have to clear up all the off the field problems first. if they gel like last year i don't see anyone stoppin them in the nfc. in the afc the pats will still be strong, but i'm gonna say they lose in the afc champ. game to indy, yes indy finally does it in indy this time.

so i'm gonna say

Eagles-23
Colts-21

but it's a long way off and i'm a little biased

Yeah last year's got so huge (over 1000 posts) that it got axed after it become obsolete.

This is going to be my preseason prediction post. After the end of the regular season, I'm going to put up a post-season prediction, which, if I'm right, will be the same as this one :)

TO was kicked out of practice today by Reid. We'll see what happens there and with the Eagles in general.

Now that Duce Staley is hurt, looks like I might need to revise my prediction, but the still have the Bus, so I'm going to hold onto it for now.

E-A-G-L-E-S!!!! said:

Yeah, I agree. It's gonna be hard to say anything about the Eagles. They need to clear up the circus that is training camp, but that's easier said than done with a guy like T.O. I also think the Falcons will be even stronger and that is bad news for a team with off the field problems.

I agree about the Steelers too. Duce not being available right away isn't good, but I do think that Jerome will be good in his place as he was last year and Duce will be back. I think the Steelers will be O.K. Hopefully they can make it to the Super Bowl this year like you said.

I agree that Buf and Atl both will at least make the playoffs. Atl even has a chance to go to the SB in my opinion. Atl has a much better defense than Buf, and would win. And it certainly wouldn't be a 49-39 score.

Atl has a better defense than BUF?? No way... Buf had the NUMBER 2 defense in the NFL last year and will have the number 1 this year for sure. I see the bills going all the way this year.

Ray,

How are you? I am happy to see this blog is back in operation for this season. I have been checking now and then to see if it was going to start up again.

Thanks for doing this again. Hopefully it will be as spirited as it was last year. I'm looking forward to it. I'm not ready to start the predictions yet. I want to wait until after the season openers this week.

drlease,

Nice to see you back again this year. No doubt my predictions will change as the season moves along, but this was so much fun last year, I wanted to get started with a "bold" preseason prediction.

And I'm doing well, thanks for asking. Hope everything is going well up there in your neck of the woods.

Last year I didn't start until about halfway through the post season. Still have half the regular season left. As soon as the end of December gets here, I'm betting this is really going to get hot again.

I was surprised that there wasn't as much traffic as well, but I see what you're saying about the time in the season. I'm sure there will be much more traffic later and especially in the post season. It will be interesting to see it all play out. My Eagles won't be there, but it will be great football and that's always a good time. We'll have to see what those Steelers can do Doc, I'm sure they'll be right there.
# November 15, 2005 3:06 PM

Raymond Lewallen said:

Yep. My preseason prediction is not turning out from the NFC standpoint. In the AFC it looks like it is going to come down to Steelers vs Colts, and the Colts will have home field advantage. Could be the year those ponies win it all.

I agree those Colts are looking very good so far. However, they have had a fairly easy schedule thus far. The end of the season will be very interesting, I think that will tell us a good bit about the top teams.

I am so glad that SOMEONE hasnt counted out the Broncos. Denver has played a phenominal year. And for people to say that the Broncos have won all of their games by fluke is stupid. Look at all the teams they played. They had one of the hardest scedules. They KILLED the pats. People are saying that the Pats lost because their QB couldnt pass the ball. THATS BECAUSE THE DEFENSE WAS DOING THEIR JOB.

My predictions.
Seahawks will beat the Panthers.
Broncos will beat the Stealers.

Broncos and Seahawks will be a CLOSE game. Its going to be a high scoring game. And their defense and offense are almost equal in strength. So I pick Broncos only because I like them more than the Seahawks. But it will be a close high scoring game.

Hey Ray
How bout them Steelers. You called it at the beginning but I didn't think they were going to pull it off. At the risk of sounding like a superstitious nut I have to say that they are making believe in some of that "team of destiny" stuff.

When they held on at Indy I knew they weren't going to be stopped this year. Besides that, the Bus lives just down the street from me and the last time I saw him riding through the hood he told us they were going all the way.

35-21 Pitt over Seattle

Raymond Lewallen said:

I did call Pitt in the beginning my friend. But after watching Denver play, and knowing that they had home field advantage, I gave them the nod.

I have to revise now, and say that Pitt is going to beat Seattle. Pitt is playing very well. They aren't going to stop Seattle's offense the way they did the others, but they'll still outscore them.

I hate to say this, but Pittsburgh has just really turned on at the right time and I have to say this...

FINAL SUPERBOWL 40 SCORE
Steelers - 21
Seattle - 17

I hate the Steelers but this team really came around at the right time, so props for that.

I have to agree that Pitt. is at their peek at the right time. They didn't peek in the middle of the season like they did last year. I think Big Ben having more rest and more experience has helped big time. I want to see the Steelers pull this off, but the Seahawks looked very good this past weekend.

Having said that I'm still going to go with

Pitt. over Seattle
21-20
Defense wins Championships

Steelers 24 Seahawks 17. It will be great game. It will be the first superbowl in a long time that the home team (steelers) actually have a distinctive home field advantage. You can expect a sea of yellow today. Bettis will have around 50 yards and a touchdown. This game will be won early in the 2nd quarter behind the arm of Big Ben and the defensive turnovers. I guarantee a Polamalu pick and at least 2 Porter sacks in this one. Of course Alexander will show up, but he will be held in check (expect 60-80 yds). Hasselbeck will have 2 picks and gain some yards late to get to around 250. One for the thumb will finally be realized for all those Steeler fans everywhere!
