Boredom at work

Yesterday the Washington Post ran an article called Boredom Numbs the Work World, Lack of Stimulation Infects Humble and High-Ranking Jobs Alike. According to the article:

“We know that 55 percent of all U.S. employees are not engaged at work. They are basically in a holding pattern. They feel like their capabilities aren’t being tapped into and utilized and therefore, they really don’t have a psychological connection to the organization,” said Curt W. Coffman, global practice leader at the Gallup Organization, whose large polling group measured employee engagement.

It eventually happened to me at my last job, at which point I found a new one. If you feel this way, my suggestion is to polish your resume and start looking for a new job.

You can also bring it to the attention of your manager that you are getting bored, feeling your skills aren’t being utilized. I did this at my last job and my manager took it as a sign to start assigning me more challenging work. May not work for everyone, but it’s worth a shot.
