Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)

If your company doesn’t have a Windows Server update strategy yet, It should! (I’ll get down off my soapbox now)

A few months ago Microsoft released their latest free upgrade tool, Windows Server Update Services. This new software enables IT administrators to deploy the latest Microsoft product updates to Microsoft Windows Server 2000, Windows Server 2003,Windows XP operating systems as well as MS Office and MS Exchange. By using Windows Server Update Services, you can fully manage the distribution of updates that are released through Microsoft Update to computers in your network.

We use this free service to update all our integration related servers as well as all our workstations without ever having to “touch” a PC. Not bad for a freebie from Microsoft!

One interesting fact: The name of this product was changed right before RTM from Windows Update Services (WUS) to Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Good catch by the MS marketing folks. Would you want to trust your server patches to a product called “WUS”?

I agree. This is a critical peice of the puzzle in any sensible organization.

When we were setting this up within our organization, we wanted to brand/customize it’s look and feel so people would know that it is coming from a trusted source (like Microsoft wasn’t – long story).

Anyway, that part wasn’t easy ;), but it’s still a good product.
