My wife is naive

I’ve had a bit of a crunch this week to get a client demo put together.  Yesterday I had planned to take an earlier train home to regain some family time.  I called my wife to tell her that things weren’t going so well.  I explained that we couldn’t get the web services to install correctly on the UAT server, and she immediately responded with:  “why wouldn’t it work on the server if it works on your computer?”  Oh sweetie, let me count the ways….

For posterity’s sake, there were too many differences:

Java 1.5.11 on my computer, Java 1.6 on the UAT server (gonna change that to be consistent)

Windows XP on my computer, Linux on the UAT server (don’t think this is actually a problem, but still)

Different Maven targets to deploy on my desktop as opposed to the server. That’s the big no-no, but I’m a Java neophyte on Tomcat/Apache Axis.

Crap. I just realized your in NY… they have lots of those trains.

I’m reading far too many blog entries tonight… they’re cross posted in my head now. :(

This is where virtual machines save your butt. I’m surprised people don’t use them more. It’s so nice to have a replica of the production environment that I can carry around with me.

With a title like that, your wife is gonna kick your ass.

Why didn’t you just tell her that “oh honey the computers are different”. My computer is like me. The server is like your mother. Either it’s being difficult, or it wants to be difficult even if it doesn’t have to.

Of course that would’ve ensured that you slept on the couch but, you got the point across easily!
